Kalisz, with about 96,000 residents in Greater Poland Voivodeship, is one of Poland's oldest cities (mentioned by Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD) and an important industrial centre of southern Greater Poland. Its unambiguous strength is personal safety — 100th percentile on violent crime (just 0.19 per 1,000), one of the best results in the country. A solid cultural offer with 4 museums and 3 cinemas rounds out the historic city. Gross wages of PLN 7,665 (89% of the national average) and unemployment of 4.3% are moderate, and high investment outlays of PLN 1.03 billion signal the vitality of local industry. Weaknesses: an alarming road-fatality count of 4.32 per 100,000 inhabitants (3rd percentile) — one of the worst — calls for urgent road-safety improvements. Demographically the city is ageing — natural increase of -8.17/1,000 (9th percentile) and low live births of 5.27/1,000 (17th percentile).
