About - Rybnik

Rybnik, with about 134,000 residents in Silesian Voivodeship, is the centre of the Rybnik Coal District sub-region, once heavily tied to mining and now diversifying its economy. Strengths: zero road fatalities in 2024 (92nd percentile), high forest cover of 30.2% (89th percentile), 627 ha of rivers (86th percentile, the Ruda and Nacyna), favourable demographics (old-age dependency 32.3, 86th percentile) and substantial investment outlays of PLN 2.63 billion (86th percentile). Full sewage coverage of 99.5%. Gross wages of PLN 7,912 (92% of the national average) and unemployment of 3.8% are decent, with attractive housing prices of PLN 5,769/m². Weaknesses: very low green-area provision at 25 m² per inhabitant (3rd percentile) — atypical for a green city — sparse cycling infrastructure (26.9 km per 100 km², 6th percentile), a thin tourism base (170 tourists per 1,000, just 2.32 bed places per 1,000) and a limited number of hotels (5). No bus lanes. Rybnik offers attractive natural surroundings and decent wages in the shadow of the Silesian agglomeration, but needs urban-infrastructure development and improved tourism appeal.
